Synthetic probes that represent the actual application path
A monitor reports the service healthy by connecting to a nearby endpoint, while remote users fail through a different DNS view and security boundary. The probe does not exercise their path.
Environment and inputs: Network and infrastructure observability; Prometheus examples describe metric semantics rather than a universal exporter schema. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Record probe location, resolver, source network, authentication context and transaction steps. Compare the synthetic path with representative users and identify bypassed dependencies.
Explain the result
A successful probe proves only the tested operation from its specific context. Local health checks and global user availability can diverge legitimately when their paths differ.
Plan the fix
Use a small set of meaningful probes covering required regions, address families and critical transactions. Keep diagnostic local checks alongside them rather than replacing all monitoring with one expensive test.
Check the result and rollback
Inject a bounded failure in a path-specific dependency and verify the expected probe detects it. Revert if probe changes create load or credentials risk without improving coverage.
