Correlate black-box symptoms with white-box mechanisms
A device alarm fires without user impact, while another incident hurts users with no obvious hardware alarm. External service observations and internal component metrics provide complementary evidence.
Environment and inputs: Network and infrastructure observability; Prometheus examples describe metric semantics rather than a universal exporter schema. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Collect useful transaction success and latency alongside routing state, queueing, errors and saturation. Align their time windows and scopes before claiming a mechanism explains the user symptom.
Explain the result
Black-box monitoring shows what the service delivers; white-box monitoring helps explain why. Neither alone guarantees complete diagnosis, especially when redundancy masks a component fault.
Plan the fix
Page on actionable service conditions and maintain internal signals for diagnosis and risk visibility. Link alerts to the affected service and dependency rather than treating every component threshold as equal urgency.
Check the result and rollback
Review incidents with both evidence types and test a masked component failure. Revert rule changes if important latent redundancy loss becomes invisible or user-impacting failure is detected too late.
