Alert inhibition during a parent infrastructure outage
A failed core dependency triggers hundreds of downstream alerts. Operators lose time acknowledging symptoms while the parent outage already explains most of them.
Environment and inputs: Network and infrastructure observability; Prometheus examples describe metric semantics rather than a universal exporter schema. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Map alert dependencies, service ownership, grouping labels and independent failure signals. Identify which downstream alerts contain additional actionable information rather than assuming every coincident symptom is redundant.
Explain the result
Grouping and inhibition can reduce duplicate notification, but overly broad suppression can hide unrelated failures. Temporal correlation alone is not proof of a true dependency.
Plan the fix
Use explicit reviewed parent-child relationships and preserve visibility of suppressed events. Keep independent critical symptoms and expiry conditions so one stale parent alert cannot silence a whole environment.
Check the result and rollback
Simulate a parent failure plus one unrelated child failure and verify both necessary actions remain visible. Revert if suppression outlives the parent condition or hides independent service impact.
