Network & Infrastructure / Telemetry, Capacity & Incident Analysis
Seasonal baselines for infrastructure demand and latency
A static threshold pages during a known monthly process yet misses an unusual load increase on a quiet night. Normal behavior varies with business schedules and workload mix.
Environment and inputs: Network and infrastructure observability; Prometheus examples describe metric semantics rather than a universal exporter schema. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Compare historical time-of-day and calendar patterns, deployment events and service outcomes. Separate legitimate recurring peaks from steadily rising demand or deteriorating resource efficiency.
Explain the result
A baseline describes expected behavior under comparable conditions, not an automatic declaration of safety. A recurring overload can still violate the service objective even if it happens every month.
Plan the fix
Use contextual baselines for investigation while keeping absolute capacity and service limits explicit. Document planned events and require ownership for exceptions instead of normalizing harmful conditions away.
Check the result and rollback
Backtest normal cycles and known incidents, including quiet-period anomalies. Revert if adaptive logic conceals sustained degradation or becomes too opaque for operators to explain an alert.
