Packet-loss localization without blaming every traceroute hop
A traceroute shows loss at an intermediate router, but later hops and the destination answer normally. The router may rate-limit responses to probes while forwarding transit traffic successfully.
Environment and inputs: Network and infrastructure observability; Prometheus examples describe metric semantics rather than a universal exporter schema. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Compare end-to-end application loss, destination probes, intermediate response rates and repeated tests from relevant sources. Record protocol and packet type because probes may follow different policies.
Explain the result
An intermediate router's willingness to generate a response is different from its ability to forward traffic. Loss that does not persist downstream is insufficient evidence of a transit forwarding defect.
Plan the fix
Localize a real end-to-end impairment using multiple observations and device forwarding counters. Avoid escalating a single hop's probe-response loss as definitive proof of a broken circuit.
Check the result and rollback
Verify loss at the destination with representative traffic and correlate it with a specific segment. Revise the attribution if independent forwarding evidence does not support the suspected hop.
