Kubernetes / Storage, Configuration & Data Protection
Plan a replacement when an immutable ConfigMap or Secret cannot be edited
An update can be rejected because the object was intentionally made immutable. Inspect metadata and immutable state rather than deleting it immediately.
Environment and inputs: Kubernetes · kubectl with supported client/server versions and delegated RBAC. Examples use namespace app unless noted. Check context, namespace, APIs and provider support first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
kubectl -n app get configmap app-config -o jsonpath='{.metadata.name}{" "}{.immutable}'
Read the result
The flag explains an intentional update restriction for this object. It does not establish which workloads still reference it.
Resolve and verify
Create a reviewed versioned configuration through the owning workflow, update workload references and verify the rollout before retiring unused objects.
Before changing production
Do not delete a live configuration object or expose Secret contents while trying to bypass immutability.
