Explain lost temporary data after a Kubernetes Pod replacement
emptyDir data belongs to a Pod's lifetime and is not a durable claim. A replacement Pod can start with an empty directory by design.
Environment and inputs: Kubernetes · kubectl with supported client/server versions and delegated RBAC. Examples use namespace app unless noted. Check context, namespace, APIs and provider support first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
kubectl -n app get pod web-0 -o jsonpath='{.spec.volumes}'
Read the result
The volume definitions distinguish emptyDir from persistent sources. Disk-backed and memory-backed emptyDir have different resource implications.
Resolve and verify
Classify the application's writes as temporary or durable, then use the appropriate supported storage design. Validate recovery after a controlled Pod replacement in a safe environment.
Before changing production
Do not store the only copy of business data in emptyDir or expect a Deployment rollout to preserve it.
