Diagnose Docker volume permissions with numeric identity in mind
A container user name may correspond to a different numeric UID than the host expects. Inspect the runtime user and mount source.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker container inspect --format '{{json .Config.User}} {{json .Mounts}}' app
Read the result
The configured user and mounts provide context, not a complete effective identity calculation. Runtime overrides, user namespaces and image account files can change interpretation.
Resolve and verify
Compare the actual application UID/GID and supported storage ownership. Apply a narrow reviewed mapping or data migration and test required access.
Before changing production
Do not recursively chown a shared production tree or run the container as root merely to bypass an access error.
