Docker / Volumes, Filesystems & Recovery
Inventory a Docker volume before choosing a backup method
A volume is persistent storage, not an automatic backup. Correct recovery depends on application consistency, storage and retained versions.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker volume inspect app-data
Read the result
The volume metadata identifies driver, labels and managed location where available. It does not prove the content is quiesced or recoverable.
Resolve and verify
Use the application's supported backup method, include required configuration and keys securely, and test an isolated restore at the intended recovery point.
Before changing production
Do not archive a live database volume blindly or overwrite the only good copy during a recovery rehearsal.
