Review persistent-data compatibility before replacing a Docker image
A new image can migrate stored data so an older image can no longer read it. Image rollback and data rollback are separate plans.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker container inspect --format '{{.Image}} {{json .Mounts}}' app
Read the result
The container's actual image ID and mounts connect the release to its persistent data. Current metadata does not describe every completed migration.
Resolve and verify
Compare vendor migration rules, backup point and release history. Rehearse upgrade and rollback with representative data before a reviewed production change.
Before changing production
Do not attach an upgraded database volume to an older binary merely because the prior image remains available.
