Docker / Compose, Swarm & Production Security
Investigate a Compose variable resolved from the wrong environment source
Shell environment, env files and service environment settings have related but different precedence and timing. Reproduce the exact deployment inputs.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker compose config --quiet
Read the result
This validates the interpolated model without displaying ordinary resolved content. It does not show which source supplied every value or verify application-side interpretation.
Resolve and verify
Compare approved file selection, shell variables and interpolation rules locally, without exposing values. Correct the intended source and validate the service through a controlled replacement.
Before changing production
Do not dump the whole environment or commit secrets to .env files merely to simplify a failed substitution.
