Check mail routing records during a delivery incident
A missing message can be delayed, filtered, misaddressed or routed incorrectly. DNS checks help establish the receiving domain's public mail configuration before inspecting message traces.
Environment and inputs: Everyday IT support · Windows PowerShell examples unless specified
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
Resolve-DnsName example.com -Type MX
Resolve-DnsName example.com -Type TXT
How to read the result
In Windows PowerShell, MX describes the domain's mail exchangers and TXT may include an SPF policy among unrelated records. These answers do not prove a specific message was accepted.
What to do next
Check the actual recipient domain, collect the message time and sanitized non-delivery report, then use the mail platform's authorized trace tools. Compare SPF, DKIM and DMARC findings with the complete message path.
Before you make a change
Do not publish mail records copied from another organization. Multiple TXT records are normal, and a DNS lookup is not a full email authentication assessment.
