Network Troubleshooting / IT Support Guides

Test access to a Windows file server before remapping drives

A mapped drive can fail because the server port is unreachable, the share path is wrong or the user lacks access. Start with the transport dependency.

Environment and inputs: Mixed platforms · each example identifies its shell or required tool

Try the diagnostic command

Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.

Test-NetConnection fileserver.example.com -Port 445

How to read the result

Windows PowerShell reports whether the client can establish a TCP connection to SMB's usual port. Success does not establish share existence or user authorization.

What to do next

Replace the hostname with the approved server. If the port works, check the exact UNC path and current identity; if it fails, compare the VPN, name resolution and network policy.

Before you make a change

Do not expose SMB directly to the public internet to make this test succeed. Retain the approved private-network or VPN access design.
