Separate RDP reachability from a Windows sign-in problem
A failed remote desktop connection may stop before authentication begins. Test the configured endpoint and port before resetting a user's password.
Environment and inputs: Mixed platforms · each example identifies its shell or required tool
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
Test-NetConnection workstation.example.com -Port 3389
How to read the result
Windows PowerShell tests a TCP handshake on the standard RDP port. An organization may use a different port or an RD Gateway, so confirm the intended access path first.
What to do next
If transport works, review the RDP error, allowed user access and server events. If the organization requires a gateway, test that approved flow rather than bypassing it.
Before you make a change
A successful TCP result does not validate Network Level Authentication or UDP transport. Never open public RDP broadly as a troubleshooting shortcut.
