Query a DNS record explicitly with dig
A resolver problem is easier to explain when the query type, answer and response status are visible together. Use a targeted lookup instead of changing system DNS settings.
Environment and inputs: Mixed platforms · each example identifies its shell or required tool
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
dig example.com A
dig example.com MX
How to read the result
On systems with BIND DNS tools, the output includes the responding server, response status and record sections. NXDOMAIN differs from a timeout or a successful empty response.
What to do next
Query the exact application hostname using the approved resolver and compare the record type with what the application requires. Preserve status and TTL when escalating.
Before you make a change
dig may need an approved package installation. Avoid exposing private names to unrelated external resolvers.
