Linux Commands / IT Support Guides
Check Linux route selection with ip route get
A VPN or secondary interface may change the route used to reach a service. Ask the kernel which path it would choose for a particular destination.
Environment and inputs: Linux · Bash-compatible shell; package and service names vary by distribution
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
ip route show
ip route get 192.0.2.10
How to read the result
The route table shows configured paths. route get reports the selected next hop, output interface and source address for the example destination without proving packets reach it.
What to do next
Replace the documentation address with the application address. Compare the selected path with the intended VPN or LAN and examine policy routing when the result is unexpected.
Before you make a change
Source-specific rules and separate network namespaces can alter application routing. Do not replace the default route without a tested recovery path.
