Linux Commands / IT Support Guides
Check Linux user identity and groups with id
A command can fail because the shell belongs to a different user or lacks a newly assigned group. Inspect the active identity before changing filesystem permissions.
Environment and inputs: Linux · Bash-compatible shell; package and service names vary by distribution
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
id
groups
How to read the result
The output identifies the current user ID and supplementary groups for the running session. A directory service change may not update groups in an already open session.
What to do next
Compare the active groups with the resource's ownership and access policy. If membership was just approved, start an appropriate new session and verify again.
Before you make a change
Do not use root or broad group membership as a permanent workaround. Service identities may have a different execution context from your login shell.
