Linux Commands / IT Support Guides
Interpret Linux uptime and load average
A high load average can reflect CPU demand or tasks waiting uninterruptibly, often on I/O. Read it in the context of host capacity and current activity.
Environment and inputs: Linux · Bash-compatible shell; package and service names vary by distribution
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
uptime
getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN
How to read the result
uptime reports recent load averages over several time windows. The processor query provides a basic logical CPU count, but container quotas can make the effective capacity lower.
What to do next
Compare load trends with CPU idle time, task states and disk latency. A high load with idle CPU calls for a different investigation from CPU saturation.
Before you make a change
Do not treat load exceeding the CPU count as a universal failure threshold. Workload type and resource limits change the meaning.
