Linux Commands / IT Support Guides
Inspect Linux interface addresses with ip
A machine with multiple interfaces can choose an unexpected source address. Inspect the active addresses before changing DNS or firewall configuration.
Environment and inputs: Linux · Bash-compatible shell; package and service names vary by distribution
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
ip -brief address show
How to read the result
The compact output lists interfaces, link state and assigned addresses. Loopback, VPN and container interfaces are normal and should be distinguished from the production uplink.
What to do next
Map the affected application's source path to its actual interface. Compare addressing and prefix length with the approved network design and a working peer.
Before you make a change
An interface being UP does not prove connectivity. Do not remove addresses from a remotely managed host during a diagnostic check.
