Windows Server / File Services, Storage & Backup
Diagnose a missing volume mounted in an NTFS directory
A service can write into an empty mount-point folder on the wrong volume after its intended data volume disappears. Inspect access paths.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-Partition | Select-Object DiskNumber, PartitionNumber, DriveLetter, AccessPaths
Read the result
The output exposes drive-letter and folder mount paths for visible partitions. A folder existing on disk is not proof its intended volume is mounted there.
Resolve and verify
Compare the mount mapping with the storage inventory and service path. Restore the correct volume through the storage owner and reconcile any files written to the underlying directory.
Before changing production
Do not recreate data directories or move files blindly while mount ownership and data location are uncertain.
