Distinguish SMB share permissions from NTFS permissions

A user can have NTFS access yet be denied through a share, or the reverse. Inspect both authorization layers.

Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.

Start with this check

Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.

Get-SmbShareAccess -Name 'Department'

Read the result

The result shows share-level grants and denies. Effective network access also depends on filesystem permissions, group membership and the user's actual session identity.

Resolve and verify

Compare the requested operation with both layers and identify the narrow missing right. Make an approved group-based correction and retest under the user's real context.

Before changing production

Do not grant Everyone full control merely to avoid understanding an effective-access failure.
