Investigate a Windows service that fails after credential rotation
A service can fail before application startup because its configured account or logon rights no longer work. Inspect identity without exposing secrets.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-CimInstance Win32_Service -Filter "Name='AppService'" | Select-Object Name, State, StartMode, StartName, PathName
Read the result
The CIM query identifies the service account and executable configuration. It does not reveal the stored password or prove that the account can log on as a service.
Resolve and verify
Compare Service Control Manager events with account lockout, credential rotation and policy changes. Repair the approved identity or right and test a controlled start.
Before changing production
Do not switch the service to LocalSystem or grant administrative membership as a generic workaround.
