Find a failed dependency behind a Windows service startup error
The visible application service may fail because another required service or resource is unavailable. Inspect its declared dependencies.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-Service -Name 'AppService' -RequiredServices
Read the result
This PowerShell query lists service dependencies known to the Service Control Manager. Application-specific database or network dependencies may not be declared here.
Resolve and verify
Check the first unavailable dependency and its own event evidence, then restore the supported startup sequence. Validate the original application after its required resources are ready.
Before changing production
Do not remove dependencies or force automatic restarts to conceal an unresolved prerequisite failure.
