Windows Server / DNS, DHCP & Server Networking
Investigate a multihomed Windows server choosing the wrong source path
Backup, management and application networks can introduce competing routes. Ask Windows which path it selects for the real destination.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Find-NetRoute -RemoteIPAddress 192.0.2.25
Read the result
Replace the documentation address with the approved client or backend address. The result identifies a selected route and source address, not verified end-to-end delivery.
Resolve and verify
Compare the route with interface metrics, more-specific paths and the intended network design. Correct the managed route or gateway through the network owner.
Before changing production
Do not remove all default routes during remote support or assign gateways to every interface without a design review.
