Windows Server / Services, IIS & Secure Operations
Treat pending-reboot indicators as evidence rather than a universal diagnosis
A maintenance failure can involve incomplete servicing, but no single registry flag represents every product's restart requirement.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Test-Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\RebootPending'
Read the result
This PowerShell check inspects one servicing indicator only. False does not prove that Windows Update, an installer or another component needs no reboot.
Resolve and verify
Compare servicing and update history with the approved maintenance record. Plan a coordinated restart only when the relevant product requires it and verify completion afterward.
Before changing production
Do not delete pending-reboot registry entries to bypass a prerequisite or restart a clustered workload without draining and capacity checks.
