Linux Server / Performance, Capacity & Containers
Interpret Linux guest performance with its virtualization context
A guest can be slow because of host scheduling pressure even when its own processes do not explain the delay. Record the platform context.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
systemd-detect-virt
lscpu
Read the result
The commands identify detected virtualization and visible CPU topology. A bare-metal result or missing detection is not an error, and guest topology is not guaranteed physical capacity.
Resolve and verify
Correlate guest steal-time observations with hypervisor metrics over the same interval. Address verified host contention or guest sizing through the platform owner.
Before changing production
Do not promise dedicated hardware capacity from the guest CPU model or change vCPU allocation without comparative testing.
