Use retained sysstat samples to compare a Linux server incident with normal load
A current healthy snapshot cannot explain a brief earlier outage. Historical samples can provide time-aligned resource evidence when collection was enabled.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
sar -u 1 5
Read the result
With sysstat installed, this command captures current CPU intervals; retained daily files require their documented read options. Collection settings and retention determine historical availability.
Resolve and verify
Compare the incident's actual time range with CPU, memory, I/O and network history and application latency. Preserve a normal baseline for the same workload period.
Before changing production
Do not imply history exists when collection was disabled or compare unrelated daily peaks as proof of causation.
