Investigate Linux tasks stuck in uninterruptible wait
A D-state task can reflect blocked storage or another kernel dependency. A force-kill may not complete until that wait resolves.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
ps -eo pid,ppid,stat,wchan:32,comm
Read the result
The state and wait-channel information provide clues, subject to kernel and permission limits. They are not a definitive stack trace or root-cause label.
Resolve and verify
Correlate affected processes with filesystem, device and network-storage errors. Repair the shared dependency and verify that tasks and application requests recover.
Before changing production
Do not assume an unresponsive kill means the process ignored it, or reboot before assessing storage integrity and preserving evidence.
