Linux Server / Performance, Capacity & Containers
Measure file-descriptor growth in the actual server process
A leak can slowly exhaust a daemon's descriptor limit while an administrator's shell remains unaffected. Inspect the intended live PID.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
find /proc/1234/fd -maxdepth 1 -type l | wc -l
Read the result
Replace 1234 with the verified process ID. The count describes visible descriptors at that moment; permission errors or PID reuse can invalidate the sample.
Resolve and verify
Trend the count through repeated representative requests and compare the process's /proc limits. Fix resource lifecycle handling before increasing a justified bound.
Before changing production
Do not inspect descriptor contents containing secrets or stop a service solely because one count is high.
