Linux Server / Boot, systemd & Service Recovery

Investigate a service startup timeout without just extending it

A service can exceed its timeout because it is blocked, misreports readiness or performs legitimate recovery work. Capture process progress and unit settings.

Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.

Start with this check

Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.

systemctl show app.service -p Type -p TimeoutStartUSec -p MainPID -p ActiveState -p SubState

Read the result

The properties identify readiness expectations and the current process context. A timeout value alone does not explain what the process is waiting for.

Resolve and verify

Correlate the journal, process waits and application recovery status. Repair the dependency or supported readiness configuration and adjust timeouts only with measured justification.

Before changing production

Do not kill a progressing recovery process or set an unlimited timeout to hide a deadlock.
