Linux Server / Boot, systemd & Service Recovery
Explain why a Linux service restarts when a socket is accessed
A socket-activated service can appear stopped and restart when its socket receives traffic. Inspect socket ownership before disabling the daemon.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
systemctl list-sockets --all --no-pager
Read the result
The list maps systemd sockets to addresses and activated services. It does not replace inspection of application listeners outside systemd.
Resolve and verify
Identify the relevant socket unit and compare its intended activation policy with the operational goal. Change the correct managed units together through a reviewed plan.
Before changing production
Do not repeatedly stop the service alone or disable unrelated sockets on a production host.
