Interpret Linux iostat latency with device and workload context
A server can be slow because storage queues grow even when CPU is mostly idle. Capture interval device statistics.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
iostat -xz 1 5
Read the result
With sysstat, the first report often includes since-boot statistics; subsequent reports reflect intervals. Modern multi-queue devices require care when interpreting utilization and concurrency.
Resolve and verify
Map the busy device to the application path and correlate latency with request rate and backend storage metrics. Reduce unnecessary I/O or repair the measured storage constraint.
Before changing production
Do not declare an array saturated solely because one utilization number approaches 100 percent.
