Linux Server / Performance, Capacity & Containers
Identify a process generating heavy Linux disk I/O
Host-level disk activity does not identify which service caused it. Collect process I/O samples over the affected interval.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
pidstat -d 1 5
Read the result
With sysstat and appropriate process visibility, this reports process disk-I/O activity. Cached writes, filesystem behavior and asynchronous workers can complicate attribution.
Resolve and verify
Match the PID to its service, scheduled work and application request pattern. Tune or reschedule the demonstrated producer and verify storage latency improves.
Before changing production
Do not kill the busiest writer without understanding transaction consistency and recovery requirements.
