Linux Server / Boot, systemd & Service Recovery
Investigate systemd start-limit failures before clearing counters
A service that repeatedly fails can reach its restart-rate limit. Clearing the limit without fixing the crash simply repeats the cycle.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
systemctl status app.service --no-pager
journalctl -u app.service -b --no-pager -n 100
Read the result
The status and recent journal show the restart loop and potentially the first process error. The final start-limit message is usually a consequence.
Resolve and verify
Repair the configuration, binary, identity or dependency error, then use the documented controlled recovery path and confirm the service remains stable.
Before changing production
Do not increase restart limits indefinitely or hide repeated failures with a faster restart loop.
