Linux Server / Boot, systemd & Service Recovery
Diagnose a systemd service failing before its executable starts
A service can fail with an EXEC-related status because its path, interpreter, permissions or security context is wrong.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
systemctl show app.service -p ExecStart -p User -p Group -p WorkingDirectory -p ExecMainStatus
Read the result
The selected runtime properties identify the intended launch context. A correct path alone does not prove the service can execute it in its sandbox.
Resolve and verify
Compare the executable and interpreter with package metadata, traversal permissions and security logs. Correct the exact launch defect and validate a controlled start.
Before changing production
Do not apply chmod 777 or run the service as root merely to bypass an execution error.
