Linux Server / Security, Updates & Automation
Compare SSH automation configuration without connecting to the server
An automated SSH job can select a different identity, proxy or hostname from an interactive command because its config and account differ.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
ssh -G app.example.com
Read the result
With a supporting OpenSSH client, -G prints the effective client configuration and exits without establishing a session. It can reveal internal endpoints and key filenames.
Resolve and verify
Run in the actual automation account's approved context and compare identity, host, proxy and authentication options. Correct the narrow configuration and test a safe permitted operation.
Before changing production
Do not disable host-key checking or put passwords in automation scripts to avoid understanding the difference.
