Check file security labels after moving Linux application data
A moved or restored directory can retain a context unsuitable for the daemon even when ownership looks correct. Compare current and expected labels.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
ls -Zd /srv/app
matchpathcon /srv/app
Read the result
On an SELinux-enabled host, the commands show the current context and policy-default expectation for the example path. Custom persistent mappings may be part of the design.
Resolve and verify
Compare the service's supported data locations with approved label mappings. Repair the persistent labeling design through the security owner and validate access in enforcing mode.
Before changing production
Do not apply an arbitrary temporary label or disable enforcement to avoid understanding the path's intended policy.
