Diagnose a cron job that works only in an interactive shell
Cron jobs can use a different PATH, working directory and identity from a successful manual test. Inspect the actual account's schedule.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
crontab -l -u appuser
Read the result
With authorized access, this reads the selected user's crontab. System crontabs, timer units and other schedulers are separate sources.
Resolve and verify
Compare absolute executable and file paths, account permissions and explicit environment with the failing command. Test a safe equivalent in the intended noninteractive context.
Before changing production
Crontabs may contain secrets. Do not paste them publicly or rerun non-idempotent maintenance just to collect output.
