Investigate a Linux user quota before deleting data

A service account can hit its allocation limit while the filesystem still has capacity. Inspect applicable quota accounting.

Compiled for Sorlavit Kim · Published · Updated · 1 min read

Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.

Start with this check

Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.

quota -u appuser

Read the result

On a system with supported quota tools and authorized access, this reports the selected user's quotas where configured. Group, project and filesystem-specific policies may require separate tools.

Resolve and verify

Compare the actual service UID and policy with the failed write. Adjust a justified allocation or approved retention workflow at the correct quota layer.

Before changing production

Do not disable quotas globally or delete unrelated files because a single account reaches its limit.
