Linux Server / Filesystems, LVM & Recovery
Review a Linux backup synchronization before it touches the destination
A reversed source or missing mount can send server backup data to the wrong place. Preview the transfer and verify both endpoints.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
rsync -a --dry-run --itemize-changes /srv/appdata/ /mnt/backup/appdata/
Read the result
The dry run reports proposed changes without copying files. The source trailing slash copies contents, and destination mount presence must be checked separately.
Resolve and verify
Confirm the destination's actual filesystem and approved retention model. Run the reviewed transfer only when safe, then validate representative content and independent recovery history.
Before changing production
Do not add --delete casually or treat synchronization alone as a versioned, isolated backup.
