Inspect a daemon's Linux file capabilities before running it as root
A service can fail a privileged operation because its supported capability or service policy differs. Inspect the executable's file capabilities.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
getcap /usr/local/bin/app
Read the result
With libcap tools, this reports capabilities on the selected executable when present. Unit-level bounding sets, ambient capabilities and namespaces can further restrict behavior.
Resolve and verify
Compare the exact required operation with the vendor-supported privilege model and systemd policy. Apply only a reviewed minimal capability or service configuration.
Before changing production
Do not add broad capabilities, setuid bits or full root execution merely to bypass a permissions error.
