Compare resolved Linux UIDs and groups across file-service hosts
A shared file can have the expected owner name on one server and another identity elsewhere when UID or directory resolution differs.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
getent passwd appuser
id appuser
Read the result
These query the host's configured identity sources rather than only reading /etc/passwd. Results can be affected by directory availability and caching.
Resolve and verify
Compare numeric UID, primary group and supplementary groups on the relevant hosts. Repair the identity mapping through the directory owner and validate real file access.
Before changing production
Do not recursively chown shared data to whichever local account happens to match a name.
