PLC / Maintenance, Reliability & OT Security
Keep temporary PLC overrides visible and time-bounded
An undocumented temporary change can become the new normal and invalidate future fault diagnosis or machine assumptions.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Record the approved purpose, owner, affected logic or parameter, operational restrictions and planned expiry of each temporary measure.
Interpret the evidence
A software note alone does not validate an override, and standard process overrides must not be confused with authority to bypass safety functions.
Resolve and verify
Resolve the underlying defect, then retire the approved temporary measure through controlled testing and update the as-running documentation.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not create hidden bypass bits or leave an override active because production appears satisfactory.
