PLC / Process Control & PID Troubleshooting
Recognize process dead time in PLC control diagnosis
An output change can take time to influence the measured process because of transport, sensor location or equipment dynamics.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Use approved historical operating records to compare command timing, actual actuator response and the first reliable measured process change.
Interpret the evidence
Communication delay, measurement filtering and physical dead time can all contribute but require different remedies. A live experiment is not automatically safe.
Resolve and verify
Build the documented process model and qualify a supported control strategy with the process owner before changing tuning or measurement design.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not perform unreviewed output steps on a live process to estimate dead time.
