PLC / Process Control & PID Troubleshooting
Check split-range mapping before adjusting a shared PID
A single output can drive different actuators over different ranges. Incorrect overlap, gap or sign can resemble unstable tuning.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Compare the approved split mapping, actuator directions, actual feedback and controller output range from documentation and recorded operation.
Interpret the evidence
A midpoint value does not universally mean both actuators are off. Dead bands and overlap requirements are process-specific.
Resolve and verify
Repair the demonstrated mapping or actuator issue and qualify the complete supported range through a controlled process test.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not command both opposing process actuators experimentally or remove designed overlap protections.
