PLC / Backups, Changes & Commissioning
Plan PLC persistent-data migration separately from code deployment
Changing names, types or layout can invalidate stored values or preserve data with an unintended meaning, depending on the runtime.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Record the approved persistent schema, current data backup method, proposed type changes and target-specific retention rules.
Interpret the evidence
A successful compilation does not prove retained recipe or calibration data remains valid. Online change and full download can have different effects.
Resolve and verify
Design and test the supported data migration and startup validation on a compatible isolated target, preserving rollback data and source revisions.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not download a changed schema to discover which values survive on the production machine.
