PLC / PLC Fundamentals & Fault Diagnosis
Investigate an unexpected PLC operating-mode change
A controller may enter STOP or another mode because of a fault, authorized engineering action or startup configuration.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Record mode history where available, diagnostic events, operator actions and the approved state of any mode selector without operating it experimentally.
Interpret the evidence
A current mode indication describes present state rather than the reason for transition. Engineering and machine-operation permissions can differ.
Resolve and verify
Correlate the change with faults and maintenance records, then follow the site's authorized restoration process and verify application readiness.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not turn a mode selector or command RUN remotely before confirming personnel and machine restart conditions.
