PLC / Industrial Networks & PLC Communications
Use the actual Modbus exception response to narrow the failure
A protocol exception differs from a transport timeout and can identify an unsupported function, address or device condition.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Record the request function, documented address range, exception code and target identity through the existing authorized client diagnostics.
Interpret the evidence
A responding server is not proof the request is valid. Exception meanings must be read from the protocol and device-specific reference.
Resolve and verify
Correct the demonstrated request or device-state issue and verify a permitted non-actuating transaction before restoring normal polling.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not retry invalid requests rapidly or suppress exceptions while continuing to use stale values as good data.
