PLC / HMI, SCADA, Alarms & Historian
Explain why a PLC trend stores fewer points than its live display
A historian can intentionally record only changes exceeding a deadband or at configured intervals. Fewer points do not automatically mean communication loss.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Review the actual sampling mode, deadband, quality rules and raw stored records rather than only the rendered chart.
Interpret the evidence
Interpolation can make sparse history look continuous. History sampling and live HMI polling are different contracts.
Resolve and verify
Compare the configuration with reporting and incident-analysis needs, then qualify a justified change and validate storage growth and timestamp behavior.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not set every deadband to zero without assessing load, retention and the required measurement resolution.
