PLC / HMI, SCADA, Alarms & Historian
Investigate an alarm repeatedly entering and leaving the active state
A chattering alarm can reflect noisy measurement, unstable process conditions or an unsuitable threshold and delay design.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Compare the raw and processed signal, quality, configured limits and alarm transitions over an approved recorded interval.
Interpret the evidence
Alarm delay, hysteresis and measurement filtering have different effects. A clean-looking trend at a slow sample rate can miss the actual crossings.
Resolve and verify
Fix the demonstrated signal or process issue and qualify any alarm design change with the process owner, preserving required detection performance.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not disable the alarm or add a long delay merely to reduce the visible event count.
